The Ridge

This neighborhood is situated along a narrow ridge in Port Jervis, of which East Main Street is the spine.  The Ridge is situated between the Neversink River and the South End.  This section of East Main Street has many beautiful historic houses.  Pictured above is the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, a beautiful Second Empire house.  The Middle School, which was originally built as the High School in 1922, is located on the  site of Glenette, the former estate of Colonel Samuel Fowler. Fowler was an officer in the Civil War and first Village President of Port Jervis.  This was also the site of the Main Street Base Ball Grounds and a second train station in Port Jervis, on the Port Jervis, Monticello and New York Railroad.
